This is a big week for The Los Gatos Social Club.
First, some of us already have attended the first “Music in the Park” last night down on the lawn of our Town Hall. It was great fun, even though Elvis, the featured guest star, had obviously seen better days. He also forgot to bring The Jordanaires (http://www.jordanaires.net/Elvis/tribute.htm). But hey, we’ll all be forgetful when we’ve been six feet under for some three decades. Coming up later this summer, The Los Gatos Social Club – thanks to the generous contribution of Kelly & Jonathan Knowles – will be the official sponsor of the Glenn Miller concert. This music will have a decidedly familiar ring to many of us who find ourselves very young souls trapped inside aging bodies. More on this concert later.
Second, Wednesday marks the opening of Jazz on the Plazz (http://www.jazzontheplazz.com/) which runs thru the end of summer. During that time, The Los Gatos Social Club will move our weekly soirees to Thursday. Many of us are involved with Jazz, (including, of course, Jazz co-chairs Teri Hope and Joanie Perry, as well as executive director Michael Jacobi) so these concerts hold the promise of a second fun evening each week. Some weeks, we might even head over to Gardino’s after the concert since all our dinners this summer are at our own member’s homes.
Third, this Thursday marks the first of our summer of hosted dinners at the homes of Social Club members. You are all invited to The World’s Greatest Tacos and Tequila Tasting this Thursday, June 25th at 45 Broadway @6:30pm as the guests of Dennise & myself. The reason we invoke the hyperbole of “The World’s Greatest Tacos” is because we plan on putting out the world’s greatest ingredients. You make your own taco; and if it is not the world’s greatest, you have only yourself to blame.
Our evening will begin with The Los Gatos Social Club’s First Annual International Guacamole Competition. At this point, we anticipate a dozen entries all competing for the The Los Gatos Social Club’s Great Avocado Award. Our panel of judges has been assembled. They are Teri Hope, Christine Currie, Leo Boger, Glynne Lewis and Jonathan Knowles. To guard against inevitable attempts at bribery, Jeff Miller has been named as El Guardo Secretos, charged with the task of not letting the judges know whose guacamole they are tasting.
What can you bring, you ask. How about a bottle of unusual tequila. If not, the usual wine or a mariachi band.
As you all enjoy yourselves this Thursday, Jonathan asks that you remember a famous Mexican proverb:
Dime con quién estás y te diré quién eres.
Roughly translated, this comes down to “tell me who you hang out with and I’ll tell you who you are”.
So come hang out with us!!!
OTHER NEWS:
It was reported last week that I was “under the weather”. Fact is, I was over the weather --- some 35,000 feet over on a quick trip to London. The Queen is fine. There were no terrorist attacks in the underground. Lloyd’s of London is prospering. And yes, it is as hideously expensive as you’ve heard.
PAMPLONA HERE THEY COME:
This from Kelly & Jonathan Knowles:
“As many of you know, we travel to Pamplona, Spain every year for the Fiesta de San Fermin, known to most of us as, "the running of the bulls." This year our very own Michael Silva will join us for what has been called the best festival on planet earth. We don't run with the bulls, but we do participate in the seven days and nights of non-stop festivus, epulum, and sermo. Also joining us this year is Ernest Hemingway's grandson John Hemingway. John, who lives in Montreal, and I are good friends and this will be John's first visit to Pamplona. Of course the reason the world knows about this fiesta is because of Ernest's first novel, The Sun Also Rises. John, author of the acclaimed book, Strange Tribe, will be our guest at The Los Gatos Social Club the next time he is in town. Check out http://www.penadelosgatos.org.”
I do believe that Jonathan knows the difference between running WITH the bulls and running AWAY FROM the bulls. Personally, I’d feel safer in a tapas bar.
